Strengthen it.

Recently I’ve been reading about how having an off balance body can cause no end of problems for your joints. Reading this was quite honestly an eye opener. Since breaking my ankle I’ve been having an increasing amount of problems with my joints, in particular my feet. But why didn’t I think about my off balance body? With limited ankle movement there are a lot of things that I can no longer do, for instance squats. Probably one of the more hated workouts a squat of any form is now an impossibility for me since my ankle just won’t bend that way.

Of course I never thought that these small problems could amount to the larger foot issues that I have been having! So I have embarked upon a mission a yoga/strengthening mission.

Now let me lead you guys to my very favourite Youtube yoga expert, Adriene. I have tried an awful lot out there and I just find hers the best, she’s not pretzeled into any strange shape and I always leave a work out feeling like I have achieved something and not had to back out of any moves! I especially love her 30 days of yoga which really works wonders! But now as I go along I realize that I need to widen my work outs and start targeting the problem areas which is my left hand side and in particular, glutes, hamstrings and calves so if any of you have a great link for me I’d love to hear about it!

therealjlow | At Home and healthy changes

I have been seeing an awful lot about snow on Instagram over the last couple of weeks. Mainly my thoughts have been, please don’t snow in the UK, please don’t snow in the UK! But secondly my clothing brain has been thinking about being cuddled inside.

This last weekend was freezing and as I had been wearing the same three outfits on repeat last week I figured I would share my at home outfit for you inside. Its nothing fancy and nothing you guys wouldn’t already be wearing but I figured, why the hell not? This is me, at home in my comfies.

The look of a women petrified of you seeing a, the mess and b, the fact that we have resorted to having three layers of books/DVD’s on our bookcase. Its only gotten mildly out of hand . . .

Onto something mildly interesting? Me and Josh are on a small health kick. Let me start by saying this happens at this time every year! We do exercise and have done regularly since moving in together. On a real week we go running, swimming and cycling and now I even do Yoga. What changes however is how much we eat, and secondly how often we go out to exercise and February and March? They are the months when we realise we are chunkier than normal.

Obviously we have upped our exercise but another thing is we have done is changed our diet. I personally don’t believe in straight up diets as they tend to be unsustainable but instead in cutting down generally and minimising the bad foods that we tend to over lean on in the winter months.

Lots of carbs, sugar and pre packaged, easy to make food all has to go and in its place we have upper our fruit and veg game! This week we have tried a healthier pasta (with less pasta), Miso Soup, we made four meals out of one roast chicken (pasta, two sandwiches, miso soup and a chicken stock and vegetable soup with creme fresh) now if thats not impressive I don’t know what is!

I intend to document my yoga journey a lot more here and hopefully we can start to see some healthy changes in the up coming months!

Fair Weathered Running and Fears

It’s that time again folks, its exercise season. I know this because a, I am definitely packing winter weight like an animal that hibernates and B, because I almost got run over by five consecutive runners on the way home last night. And in the dark, over a high level bridge it can be pretty scary. It was almost like being roped into a flash mob. (That’s like a major nightmare of mine, along with people dressed up as Disney characters – *shudder*).

But yes, there are people like me getting fit all over the place! Fair weathered exercisers. I’m personally taking it slow – as in crawling almost backwards through the local pool a couple of times while I wait to get back on that bicycle! It’s just no fun with snow (re: floods) on the ground!

See its that time again when I go back to exercise. I have to be honest I haven’t done much since November it’s terrible. So with the weather hopefully beginning to look up again here comes exercise!

Five things.



Cruel and unusual. This is thursday’s/maybe fridays outfit post. But I had planned to take two outfit posts this weekend, but of course life meant that we fell asleep on the couch watching cloudy with a chance of meatballs on Netflix’s. It happens more times than it should thats for sure.


So instead, I figured I’d do a five things post about life lately. To make it up to you. I’d hate for you to stop dropping on by – otherwise poor Josh’ll have to put up with my useless ramblings all on his own! The horror (I can see Josh Shuddering from here!) So . . .

1. I love date night, they are just the highlight of the month.  For this month we enjoyed an amazing new starter dish from Zizzi. It just blew us away we love a good fish dish and this just ticked all the boxes, squid rings, prawns and whitebate, what more could you want? Oh yeah, wine but we had that too so it was perfect . . .

2. I’m braving swimming, alone tomorrow. For the first time. I don’t know when I became so useless at doing things like this on my own. Going running on my own? shopping? driving? Work? meetings with strangers? sure no problem. But going swimming cycling alone? oh god no. The horror. Luckily for me I’m now on mandatory physio approved sports so the having to suck it up and do it thing is helping quite considerably. Which leads me onto . . .

3. I’ve started another round of physiotherapy for my previously broken ankle. I thought it was gonna be great, six sessions maybe and then out? But instead I got told how concerned they were and that I would need to come in every week and have two hours in their gym if possible. On top of that they might still have to put me forward for xrays and possibly surgery. . . .

And believe me my surgical options? Gross. Either Knocking me out and drugging me so they can physically move my ankle for me (hopefully without re fracturing it). Or going in, removing the plates and screws and scraping (Yes, the word scrape was used . . icky, icky, ick.) out all the gross bits and scar tissue. Lovely. Needless to say I’ve upped my approved sports (I got banned from running and hiking) so I’m now doing a lot of cycling, swimming and stretches. I now even brush my teeth standing on one leg just to make sure I don’t have to go through all that again!  

4. I’m finally feeling a bit rested again. For some reason this winter a, stretched on forever and then gave me so many colds and things to do I felt like I barely stopped except to be incredibly unwell or B, have a flare up of IBS or just have a million things to do! 

We went to my parents last? maybe two weeks ago and it was lovely. I got to see all my lovely besties from H-town. Chill with my family and just have a bit of breathing space from the manicness that has been going on these days. Its been wonderful and our weekends have been a bit more chill which has been awesome.

So i’m feeling good, and that is just plain awesome.

5. And finally?

(I know, thank god your thinking) Shopping! This month I’ve only allotted a small amount of fashion money (its car paying month – how is it MOT’s Road Tax and insurance always managed to bunch up all at the same time?) So I actually planned for once! 

I have fallen in love with the Autumn fashion again, it happens every year I just can’t seem to stop myself! But Next is always my starting base I love getting a few basic see you through pieces and its been no different this year. As you’ve seen in the post below.

So this month I thought I’d invest in some flat heeled, knee high boots and their most amazing herringbone leggings! So fun and comfy for once! (I’ve always struggled with trousers without stretch, I’m obviously a strange shape!)

Running On Repairs



On my mind at the moment? Injuries. As you may have seen, I have recently re taken up running and cycling and since starting I’ve come to re learn and realise the extent on an accident which happened at work in September 2011. I have been debating posting this as do you really care that im hulking a ton of metal in my leg around? but then I thought maybe this could be interesting? And to be honest the scars I’m now rocking are such a part of life and how things have shaped up since then has so much to do with this injury that its tied up into everything. My clothes (no big heels 😦 ), My home (which was chosen because it had a lift and I was still on and off crutches at the time), my exercise (lack of movement need I say more?), my job (not working for a year really puts things in perspective and pretty much everything else. So here goes, the tale of when I broke my ankle . . .

As someone who appears doesn’t do anything by halves I was just about to see Boris Johnson in the VIP section of the Westfield shopping centre when the worst happened. I fell down a redonkulously small step. Dislocated and broke my ankle in two places resulting in a surgery needing, unstable break. I was meant to go on holiday for the first time with the boy when this happened as well. See I had all these plans to go shopping for holiday clothes after work but instead I found myself on Morphine and in the back of an ambulance texting Josh how “I don’t think I can go on holiday . . .” (Who said you were meant to make sense on pain drugs?) Worst still, I broke it three days after my 21st birthday, broke it on my Great grandmothers birthday and had surgery on my mothers, what a birthday celebration!

So now my ankle looks a little something like this  . . . (this is not my ankle – its someone else’s with rough guidelines of my metal work. I never got to keep my x ray much to my families disappointment.)



I took the bottom of my fibula clean off which almost meant that i would have to spend another two weeks (on top of six) in a cast but thankfully that didn’t come to fruition. 



This is so poorly done its crazy . . . (my apologies) but anyway I ended up with a grand total of nine screws and a plate, joy of joys. The hardware has never really been a problem however, its been everything else.

Unless you’ve been through a joint break you don’t necessarily think about recovery. Six weeks in a cast and then your walking right? Try six months on crutches in fact and for myself physio twice a week, talk about a long recovery! and yet even now almost two years down the line and i’m stuck with an ankle with only 65% movement, swelling with the weather plans on raining or snowing, no heels of a certain height, no flip flops/dolly shoes for long periods of time. 

Sometimes I wish this never happened, I miss tall, sky scrapper heels or bending my ankle properly and not running like a dork, that would be nice. But alas, you can’t have everything and one thing I can’t have is a non damaged ankle so getting back into proper exercise has been an interesting journey so far.

So far the best thing for me is swimming, cycling and the odd session on a Powerplate (with ankle stretches this sort of jiggles the bones and relaxes the muscles a bit and allows me a few minutes of perfectly normal walking. However before the injury I had fallen in love with running. I love the high you get after, the feeling once you’ve pushed through the ‘run fat boy run’ mental wall, the freedom feeling and just knocking yourself out at full pelt. 

So I took the risk. I look silly (most of the time) while warming up but after a month or two its beginning to come back together. By using a form of interval training (walk, jog, walk, jog, run, walk, walk, jog) I’m lucky enough to be able to begin building the ankle back up. Sure I have set backs, but I’m pretty sure that by the anniversary of the break (13th of September) this year that me and my ankle are going to be that much closer to not running like Phoebe from friends. 

If you’ve broken a joint before what exercises did you do to build its strength and flexibility back up and if you haven’t, try not to. It’s so much better in the long run I promise.

Sport? Exercise? ack!



I have to warn you. I might start talking about exercise and sport. I know. I’m still pretty horrified about the whole ordeal. But I’ve found running away from yourself is harder than it looks. I mean, my feet keep following me and they are wearing running shoes.

And as if that wasn’t enough? Thats real mud on my legs up there folks! and even worse i’m loving it, every muddy minute of it.

So get ready for it! Welcome to the real, realjlow. Mud, running, injuries, ibs and all. And fashion – I honestly couldn’t live without it.

Secondly, whats everyone been up to today and this long weekend? I’d like to tell you some amazing plans or that today I breathed fire but alas, that wasn’t the case. This weekend for us is going to be spent spending some time with both our families, getting chores done and going on walks.

and today? We had lunch with the boys family and went for a jog together because after all the couple that jogs together stays together right? Exciting right?
